At least thirteen passengers perish and 98 wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the national leader.

The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term concluded the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid rate, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had also raised persistent concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
